Both the ZF (XK8) and the Mercedes (XKR) automatic gearboxes are supposed to be ‘sealed for life’ units with no need to service the gearbox. These gearboxes are no exception to the fact that the oil and therefore the filters will become contaminated with mileage and to preserve the life of the unit, they will benefit from an oil change at 50,000 and thereafter 30,000 mile intervals. In the past, servicing the autobox was prohibitive due to the cost of the special oil / filter required for the job. Changing the filter and oil every 40 to 50,000 miles will ensure smooth gearshifts and overall prolong the life of the gearbox.
